Chelsea defender Ryan Bertrand, who joined the England squad earlier in the week as a late call-up, has joined Blues team-mate Frank Lampard on the road back to London from Burton.
Bertrand has been withdrawn through illness. No replacement has been named as yet, and he will in all likelihood not be replaced at all.
Meanwhile, Lampard’s injury problems have now officially ruled him out of the FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifier against San Marino tomorrow evening. Along with Bertrand, he is heading back to Chelsea for treatment. He has already been replaced by Jonjo Shelvey of Liverpool, who has joined up with the senior squad for the first time this week.
Both Lampard and Bertrand will return to England duty on Sunday to be assessed ahead of the trip to Warsaw, where England face one of the trickiest qualifying matches in the group next Tuesday.
