England Under-21s to face Serbia in UEFA Euro 2013 playoff

After securing their UEFA Euro 2013 qualification playoff place by beating Norway at Chesterfield on Monday, Stuart Pearce’s England Under-21 side have a potentially tricky obstacle to overcome to reach the finals tournament in Israel.

England will play Serbia over two legs in the middle of October to determine which of the two teams will get a place in the finals. No teams qualify automatically for the competition – winning the qualification group meant a guaranteed and seeded playoff place but there is work yet to be done.

Pearce’s men play at home first in the two-legged qualifier. The date and venue are yet to be confirmed.

Elsewhere, Spain face Denmark, Italy play Sweden, Czech Republic play Russia, Slovakia play Netherlands and Germany face an extremely tough tie against Switzerland. England won their group ahead of the Norwegians, who must now beat France over two legs to secure their place in the finals.
