Southampton, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur players added to England squad

With injuries and illnesses mounting and additional withdrawals taking their toll on Roy Hodgson’s England squad, he has called in three extra players for the FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifying game against Ukraine at Wembley tomorrow night. Theo Walcott and Daniel Sturridge have pulled out through illness, meaning that Hodgson felt the need to add to his squad despite not doing so in response to other problems.

The ink is dry on the fax paper and Jim White has been cryogenically frozen again for a few months; the summer transfer window is now over and supporters everywhere are getting to grips with the new players in the teams they support. Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney out of World Cup qualifiers

When England begin their qualifying campaign for FIFA World Cup 2014 in Chisinau at the beginning of next month they will be doing so without the services of Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney, who has been ruled out for at least four weeks because of an injury sustained during United’s Premier League win over Fulham. Rooney came on as a substitute after Robin Van Persie started in his place and was a part of one or two meaty clashes before a coming together with Hugo Rodallega that left the former Everton teenager with what has been universally dubbed “a nasty gash”. Get the guffaws out of your system now.

Goals, goals, goals? England lacking punch up front

When England kicked off their recent friendly against the Netherlands at Wembley, one position in particular provided cause for alarm. Of the squad’s three remaining forwards none had ever started for their country at senior level and one had never played for England at all. Stuart Pearce’s options up front were limited to say the least, and it wasn’t just a temporary problem caused by frivolous withdrawals from the squad.

Under-21s: England 4-0 Belgium

England’s Under-21 team took a huge step towards securing qualification for UEFA Euro 2013 with a comfortable 4-0 win over nearest rivals Belgium at the Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough on Wednesday evening. The team played under the guidance of Brian Eastick and did absent manager Stuart Pearce proud, leaving a seven-point gap below them at the top of qualifying Group 8.
