Under-21s

Serbia punished (a bit) by UEFA for Under-21s chaos after qualifier against England

The news is finally in after UEFA’s investigation into the scenes of violence and racism at the end of England Under-21s’ successful UEFA Euro 2013 qualification playoff against Serbia in Krusevac two months ago. In addition to the sanctions meted out to Serbia, England will be without Steven Caulker for the first two matches of the finals in Israel next June, and without Thomas Ince for the opener.

I just got out of bed. I didn’t bother getting up today, didn’t go to work, didn’t do my hair – and if you know me, you know that matters. I certainly didn’t vote for my local policing wotsit. There didn’t seem much point, really. For all the talk of cutting costs, hiring more bobbies and not allowing the local polisen to oversee badger culls – I’m looking at you, Gloucestershire – no candidate has vowed to lock up that dastardly Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Stuart Pearce’s England Under-21 side are another huge step closer to qualifying for UEFA Euro 2013 in Israel after a professional performance and a sound victory over Azerbaijan at Baku’s Dalga Stadium. The match was played this afternoon and goals from Tottenham Hotspur’s Steven Caulker – who also found the net in the team’s previous outing, a defeat against Belgium – and Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.
