England manager Roy Hodgson has been fighting his corner lately, first bemoaning the use of international breaks by clubs and players looking for an excuse to take a holiday and then taking on English football’s elephant in the room: the ratio of homegrown players to foreign imports in the Premier League.
Former England international midfielder Joe Cole has sealed his return to an old stomping ground, signing for West Ham United on an 18-month deal. Cole graduated from the Hammers academy into the first team, and left the club in 2003 to pursue glory with Chelsea.
The most widely expected transfer of the newly open January window has been completed right on schedule. Chelsea and England forward Daniel Sturridge has been preparing to head for Merseyside for a few weeks and his move to Liverpool was confirmed this afternoon. He joins another former Chelsea employee, manager Brendan Rodgers, at Anfield.
David Beckham has a unique position in the football world. Through masterful marketing and almost flawless exploitation of his carefully managed image, Beckham has elevated himself above mere football. Even at the age of 37, the former England captain remains by some criteria the biggest star in the game. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are recognised globally for their own reasons, Messi’s almost exclusively relating to the game itself while Ronaldo’s more closely approximate to the building of Brand Beckham.
