Premier League Recap: Andy Carroll scores two, Liverpool duo overpower Aston Villa

The bottom end of the Premier League has been getting ever tighter, and now a larger crop of teams are looking over their shoulders at what seems certain to be the one remaining spot in the relegation zone. Defeat for Aston Villa and a win for Wigan Athletic mean Paul Lambert’s team are once again the ones needing to vacate it.

A busy fixture list in the Premier League means a bumper midweek programme and a Wednesday night Match of the Day. Sounds good on the face of it, but I hope your luck has been better than mine. Not only did my team suffer a catastrophic loss, but my mobile betting app adventure came within one goal of a rather tasty bet coming in. Thanks, Tottenham.

10 England players to watch in the Premier League this season

Football’s moral malaise and the Olympic Games GOLD RUSH (note the tabloidy uppercase) have collided of late, creating an ungodly smog of righteous posturing, largely from people who will either gleefully return to their football-focused lives today, or middle-class part-time sports “audience” members who aren’t interested in football anyway. It’s been said in many quarters that enthusiasm for the new season is low as a result. Not here – for all of my own criticism of football, footballers and football fans, I can’t wait.

Match Preview: Sweden v England

A point against France is no bad way to start a tournament. Eight years ago Sven-Goran Eriksson’s England couldn’t manage it despite leading into the final minutes, and they put in a reasonable showing for the remainder of their tournament participation. It does, however, leave England with a job to do, and it’s a job that begins with defeating Sweden this evening in Kiev. It’s not going to be easy.
