Premier League Recap: goals for Wayne Rooney, Stewart Downing and Aaron Lennon

With Manchesters United and City both winning and keeping up the 12-point gap at the top, the really interesting battle in the Premier League at the moment is the one at the bottom. Aston Villa, Reading and Queens Park Rangers remain in the bottom three but Wigan Athletic in particular are in danger of dropping back in next weekend.

It’s been a week of mixed fortunes on the field for England, and there’s been plenty of news to pick through besides. It’s worth noting, of course, the developments this week regarding Hillsborough. The families of the 96 supporters lost that day have been vindicated in their 23-year cause and I wish them every success in securing some form of justice. The Football Association is among those that should be hanging their heads.

The ink is dry on the fax paper and Jim White has been cryogenically frozen again for a few months; the summer transfer window is now over and supporters everywhere are getting to grips with the new players in the teams they support. Deadline day brought with it all the usual drama and, of course, accusations of last-minute business dealings and panic buying. Some clubs have clearly improved their personnel, while others have lost key players. One thing was clear from certain incoming transfers at some Premier League clubs: television money in this country has raised the stakes.
