England manager Roy Hodgson spent his Saturday afternoon at a gloriously sunny Craven Cottage and was rewarded with a full-blooded game between two London sides. As ever, the most noteworthy developments took place near the bottom of the table and in the fumble for the final UEFA Champions League spot. Manchester United are the champions.

A glorious, sunny weekend provided the backdrop for a full Premier League programme. At the top, the dull title race at least had the grace to keep itself to itself with a Manchester derby, but the big winners in the bottom half are the teams that really enjoyed themselves. Southampton, Newcastle United and Aston Villa supporters had smiles on their faces on Monday morning.

After 135 minutes of England’s FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifying double-header everything seemed to be going wonderfully. San Marino had been dealt with to the tune of eight unanswered goals and Montenegro, for all the bluster, were looking a shadow of the team we’d expected them to be. They were yet to be beaten by England and we had all been expecting difficulties again, but few had come our way.
