Adam Johnson completes transfer from Manchester City to Sunderland

No sooner had Sunderland spent big money to bring in striker Steven Fletcher from Wolverhampton Wanderers, than they did it again to sign someone to improve the supply he can expect at the Stadium of Light. Manchester City and England winger Adam Johnson has become Martin O’Neill’s latest signing for the Premier League club and adds to their strength on the flanks – a classic O’Neill feature, of course. Sebastian Larsson and James McClean have some sturdy new competition.

UEFA Euro 2012: Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry replaced by Phil Jagielka

England have suffered an injury blow in midfield ahead of UEFA Euro 2012. Manchester City’s Gareth Barry came on as a substitute in England’s 1-0 win over Norway in Oslo on Saturday and was clearly out of sorts, giving up possession with alarming ease and demonstrating a quite appalling lack of sound decision making. But no sooner had I launched the fifth volley of expletives in the direction of the televisual personification of City’s midfield metronome than he was withdrawn with an injury. As an Aston Villa fan, je ne regrette rien.

Match Reaction: Norway 0-1 England

Roy Hodgson’s first game in charge of England was a low key affair, nestled alongside Eurovision in the television schedule – actual human people watch that garbage, apparently – on an evening far more conducive to the first legitimate barbecuing opportunity of the summer. So as England stepped out onto the field at Oslo’s Ullevaal Stadion on Saturday the television audience may well have been limited to viewers with acute back pain and only four television channels in their new flats. Guilty as charged.
