Danny Welbeck and Jack Wilshere on PFA Young Player of the Year shortlist

The England team is represented by two players on the shortlist for the Professional Footballers’ Association Young Player of the Year Award. Manchester United’s Danny Welbeck and Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere have picked up votes from their fellow players along with one Welsh player and three Belgians.

Match Reaction: Sweden 4-2 England

I just got out of bed. I didn’t bother getting up today, didn’t go to work, didn’t do my hair – and if you know me, you know that matters. I certainly didn’t vote for my local policing wotsit. There didn’t seem much point, really. For all the talk of cutting costs, hiring more bobbies and not allowing the local polisen to oversee badger culls – I’m looking at you, Gloucestershire – no candidate has vowed to lock up that dastardly Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

IBWM’s The 100: Danny Welbeck (Manchester United)

Every year In Bed With Maradona identifies 100 young players to watch, assesses them twelve months later and then does it all over again. This is a project I’ve been working on with Jeff Livingstone, David Hartrick and Ryan Keaney since August and it’s a monster. Over the next five weeks, we’ll be running the rule over The 100 for 2012. In mid-December, we’ll announce the list for next year.

This week’s instalment includes Manchester United and England striker Danny Welbeck.

Match Reaction: England 5-0 San Marino

With Ukraine playing in Chisinau and unable to break down Moldova, England’s 5-0 victory over San Marino – joint bottom of the FIFA World Rankings – allowed Roy Hodgson’s side to take a three-point lead at the top of Group H in FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifying. It was a frustrating night for England, who lost Theo Walcott to an early injury and took over 30 minutes to find the net.
