England in the UEFA European Championships: Belgium/Netherlands 2000

The near euphoria of parts of UEFA Euro ’96 was barely repeated at FIFA World Cup 1998 in France, where England finished second in Group G because of a defeat by Romania, and went on to lose on penalties in an infamous second round game against Argentina in St Etienne. Glenn Hoddle departed in ignominious circumstances and was replaced in time for UEFA Euro 2000 by Kevin Keegan, who went on to quit after a defeat by Germany in the last international game at rhe old Wembley Stadium.

England famously failed to qualify for FIFA World Cup 1994 in the United States, creating a four-year gap between major tournaments during which the top end of English football began to change fundamentally. Between England’s poor showing at UEFA Euro 1992 and their participation in the next European Championships four years later the Premier League played its formative seasons, with BSkyB revolutionising television coverage and Manchester United emerging as the nation’s dominant footballing force of the 1990s.

If UEFA Euro 1988 spelled the end for England’s Bobby Robson era, FIFA World Cup 1990 sent the great man off to his new job on a real high. After an appalling showing in West Germany, England’s World Cup squad returned from Italy as heroes.

England Greats: Alan Shearer

There are football supporters, England supporters, who are old enough to accurately judge Alan Shearer – the latest in the England Greats series – by the quality of his punditry but young enough to not remember just how good a player he was. Sure, they’ve seen a few highlights and might be able to recall his last couple of seasons, but the extent to which he was arguably the last of his kind will be lost on more than a few Match of the Day viewers.

Top 5 England goals

When Gareth Barry’s wayward header flew miraculously into the Sweden net without taking an enormous deflection on the way in (sort of), it brought up 2,000 England goals.

It sounds impressive enough but I actually have no context for it, so instead of shouting from the rooftops about how awesome or crap we are, I’m taking the opportunity to share my favourite five England goals of all time. Or rather, my favourite five England goals I can remember first-hand, so anything after World Cup Italia ’90. (Weirdly, my England memory appears to begin very specifically between extra time and penalties against West Germany in that competition.)
