England in the UEFA European Championships: series roundup

England’s UEFA European Championships history is a tale of unfulfilled promises and occasional abject failure. From the inability to qualify for the two tournaments in the miserable 1970s to the limp efforts either side of FIFA World Cup Italia ’90, England have largely failed to get to grips with the Euros, notable exceptions in 1996 and 2004 notwithstanding.

UEFA Euro 2012 is now just days away and England are in a difficult group. If they progress, their quarter-final is likely to be even trickier. The benchmarks overall are not impressive, with England’s record of qualifying for the knockout stages remaining exceptionally poor. Regardless, this series features iconic moments, legendary players and more than a few wonderful England goals. Enjoy.
