The glitzy shindig in London was accompanied by a seemingly endless bombardment of self-congratulatory tweets that made the FA come across like a kid with a new toy.

Barcelona and Argentina megastar Lionel Messi has tonight been named as FIFA World Player of the Year for the fourth consecutive year. The Ballon d’Or announcement was made earlier this evening in Zurich and surprised absolutely nobody.
