Football needs rivalry or it is nothing. It’s all part of the sporting spirit, a vital portion of what makes football more than a game and more obsessively involved than almost any other cultural phenomenon. It takes sport to a higher level, so much so that developing leagues such as Major League Soccer consider it a vital component, either organically or artifically, in their progress.

Former England, Newcastle United and Ipswich Town manager honoured with Sir Bobby Robson Day

If you follow the Football Association on Twitter, it will not have escaped your notice that the game’s governing body in England marked its 150th Anniversary yesterday. The glitzy shindig in London was accompanied by a seemingly endless bombardment of self-congratulatory tweets that made the FA come across like a kid with a new toy.

FIFA Ballon d’Or 2012 votes from Steven Gerrard and Roy Hodgson

Barcelona and Argentina megastar Lionel Messi has tonight been named as FIFA World Player of the Year for the fourth consecutive year. The Ballon d’Or announcement was made earlier this evening in Zurich and surprised absolutely nobody.
