England Nil: the stuttering run-up must die

Each week (well, most weeks) I’ll be writing a column for TSC that isn’t focused on the England national team – I do sometimes pay attention to other football. We begin at Old Trafford in the UEFA Champions League with a penalty kick that reignited a longstanding frustration of mine and could easily have cost Manchester United a couple of points in their first group match in this year’s competition.

FA Cup Final programme sales to benefit Cardiac Risk in the Young

The blow of having to turn down a VIP ticket to the FA Cup Final – the ruddy FA Cup Final! – on Saturday has been eased by the news that Cardiac Risk in the Young, my favourite charity, has been selected as this year’s recipient of £1 from every programme sold for this year’s showpiece clash.

Football’s unity in support for Fabrice Muamba means little unless we learn from the experience

Last weekend, Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba – who has represented England at every level up to Under-21 – suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch during Bolton’s FA Cup tie at Tottenham Hotspur. His heart stopped for 78 minutes before it was finally restarted in hospital and Muamba then spent some time in intensive care under anaesthetic before a better picture of his condition could be achieved.
