After 135 minutes of England’s FIFA World Cup 2014 qualifying double-header everything seemed to be going wonderfully. San Marino had been dealt with to the tune of eight unanswered goals and Montenegro, for all the bluster, were looking a shadow of the team we’d expected them to be. They were yet to be beaten by England and we had all been expecting difficulties again, but few had come our way.
We probably should have known that Rio Ferdinand would end up at the centre of some godforsaken sideshow when Roy Hodgson called him up for the England squad to play against San Marino and Montenegro. Sure enough, the abuse dished out by England fans in Serravalle on Tuesday has become a huge distraction.
