Could friendly shoot-outs mean the end of penalty failure for England?

England manager Roy Hodgson wasted no time in tasting a familiarly flavoured defeat after taking over from Fabio Capello earlier this year. After a small clutch of friendlies, Hodgson went straight in at the deep end at UEFA Euro 2012. His pragmatic approach and one almighty effort against Sweden took England through as the winners of Group H, and a good swig of luck combined with Italian profligacy allowed them to fight the Azzurri over 120 goalless minutes. Then, though, the inevitable: England lost in yet another penalty shoot-out.

Fulham manager Martin Jol has been effusive in his praise for one particular target as the January transfer window approaches. The Dutchman may well be attempting to steal a march on his rivals for the signature of Derby County’s Will Hughes simply because he knows there are so many of them, and some have more pulling power than the West London club.

The baby-faced midfielder is considered one of England’s best teenage prospects, and, as he continues to make a name for himself in the Championship, the clubs looking to snare him know that playing the waiting game is likely to prove fruitless.

Ho ho ho! Christmas is here but there’s no rest for the wickedly obsessive, so football continues at 100mph right through the festive period. Nevertheless, it’s a bit of a quiet spot in the international arena, so there’s likely not too many changes in Roy Hodgson’s thinking when it comes to his England squad.
