It’s often said that today’s England national team is lacking nothing more profoundly than a genuinely creative midfielder with a varied passing range and the vision to match. The second subject of the England Greats series is Paul Gascoigne, a player who had all that and more, but only when he was at his best. Sadly, his best was too often overshadowed by moments inspired from an altogether less brilliant place. Off the pitch his story is far more tragic than a tale of wasted talent.
